It’s harvest time at Summerhill, and that’s not fruit and vegies, but specialty timbers. This summer we’re felling and milling 2 beautiful timber species; Eucalyptus regnans (Vic Ash or Mountain Ash) and Poplar.
Eucalyptus regnans is one of the tallest trees in the world, and although our trees are only 40yrs old they are already close to 70m tall. The timber is strong and light in colour with occasional red gum streaks. It is used throughout NZ and Australia for flooring, interior cladding and feature walls.
Poplar is possibly the most versatile tree grown in NZ, but very under-rated. It holds up our hillsides, stock can eat the leaves in a drought, the timber is strong and can be treated like Pine. The timber is a beautiful white – light golden colour, made into decorative ply abroad, but just as beautiful in solid wood for interior walls and feature areas.
The areas being harvested will be replanted this winter in native timber trees and more Poplar on the steep hill country. As with all harvest operations safety is paramount, so please stay behind the signs and tape, but do let us know if you’re interested in any of these stunning locally grown timbers.
